Gaggia Classic UP — PID single-boiler espresso machine, made in Italy

The modification everyone used to make, done at the factory

For years the standard advice on a Gaggia Classic was to buy it and then fit a PID yourself. The UP ships with one already installed, which removes the soldering iron from the equation and leaves nothing for you to open.

How it works

A dual PID system regulates the boiler, and you set brew temperature in single-degree steps between 176°F and 212°F, in Celsius or Fahrenheit, with the live boiler temperature shown while it climbs. While brewing, the same display doubles as a shot timer. A low-flow pre-infusion cycle wets the puck gently before full pressure arrives, which is the part that makes light roasts behave.

Who it suits

A good fit if you are stepping up from pods or a pressurised basket, you want real temperature control without a four-figure machine, and you like that a large community already knows how to service this model.

Consider another machine if you need to brew and steam at the same time, or you want the heavier brass build of a machine twice the price.
